Interviews, insight & analysis on digital media & marketing

Digital Women: Angela Knibb, Digital Partner, OMD EMEA “We’re not just participating in the future of digital, we’re shaping it”

What’s the biggest opportunity for women in digital marketing right now?

AI and automation are changing everything, fast. And that brings real opportunity for women, especially in areas like ethical AI, inclusive design, and responsible innovation. AI reflects the people who build it, so it’s vital we bring more diverse voices to the table, right from the start.

You don’t need to be in a technical role to make an impact here. Understanding how AI works, and how to challenge the bias baked into it, gives you influence and edge.

At the same time, there’s a growing demand for empathetic leadership and audience-first thinking. This is where women thrive, driving strategy with emotional intelligence and cultural awareness. We’re not just participating in the future of digital, we’re shaping it.

What could companies do to make digital better for women?

    • Make flexibility universal. Women without kids are often expected to be always available. Women with kids are expected to catch up later. That’s not equality, it’s burnout. Flexibility should be for everyone.
    • Unpack gendered feedback. Tone-policing, assumptions about confidence vs aggression, it’s everywhere. Train leaders to recognise and challenge this.
    • Sponsor, don’t just mentor. Mentoring is passive. Sponsorship is active. Put women forward for opportunities, invest in their growth, and open doors.

What support has mattered most to you?

Coaching and my own research and reading into those topics changed everything. It gave me tools, language, and the confidence to advocate for myself, something I used to avoid.

I still find it uncomfortable, but I try to show up for myself the way I do for others.

Equally important is having a trusted circle to lean on in the moment. Not just to reflect after the fact, but to navigate challenges as they happen.

Build a network of hype-people and truth-tellers, people who know your value and help you own it.

What’s the biggest myth about women in digital?

That we’re less ambitious or less confident. We’re often working twice as hard to be heard. while doing invisible emotional labour in the background.

And a myth we sometimes believe ourselves?

That we have to over-deliver, stay quiet, or tone ourselves down to be accepted. We don’t. We deserve to take up space. It’s not always comfortable, but it’s how we move forward, for ourselves and the women coming up behind us.
