My Digital Hero: Greg Grimmer, CEO, Mediatel

We’re asking some of our industry’s leading figures to nominate their digital hero and to explain what’s so special about them.

The inspirational Greg Grimmer is a true digital industry veteran. He joins Mediatel as CEO on 1 July after five years at Fetch, where he led its sale to Dentsu. His past roles include MD of seminal digital media agency ZED.

Who is your digital hero?

Rob Norman. [Rob helped to build WPP’s Group M into the world’s biggest media buyer before retiring after 31 years at the company and its previous iterations. He’s now a director at Knotch and non-exec director and advisor at multiple companies including comScore and BBC Global News.]

What has he done to win hero status in your eyes?

He was the first person to show me the power of ‘The information Super Highway’ in about 1994.

How has their heroism helped drive digital?

He never shirked from not just evangelizing about the opportunities digital media offered but also its innate flaws and flaws of some of the key players.

What the biggest challenges in digital we need another hero to solve?

We need a creative Hero – a John Webster for the 21st Century who can produce a canon of consistent brilliant audio- visual work to make brands famous and successful.

What is your most heroic personal achievement so far in digital?

I think heroic is the wrong verb, but I am proud to have led some great digital businesses particularly Zed and Fetch where I both employed and worked with some real digital stars of today and tomorrow.
