My Digital Hero: Jeff Simmons, Senior Client Partner, Microsoft Advertising

Jeff Simmons is Senior Client Partner heading up the Automotive Vertical (UK) at Microsoft Advertising, with over twelve years’ experience in the digital advertising space.

Who is your digital hero?

While the digital industry is filled with visionaries who have shaped my professional journey, Caroline Orange-Northey stands out as someone whose impact resonates deeply with me. Currently serving as Director of Retail at Pinterest and previously as Head of Lifestyle Industries at Amazon, Caroline exemplifies how innovative thinking and determined leadership can transform digital commerce.

Her career trajectory reflects not just personal success, but a genuine commitment to reimagining how brands connect with consumers in the digital age.

What has she done to win hero status?

My hero status for Caroline was earned through direct collaboration during our time at Amazon, where I witnessed firsthand her exceptional ability to transcend conventional thinking. What distinguishes Caroline is her remarkable talent for deeply understanding business challenges and then crafting solutions that others might never envision.

She has a mindset that embodies “Difficult takes a day and impossible takes a week.”

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing her methodically dismantle challenges with a combination of analytical rigour and creative problem-solving. Whether restructuring how lifestyle brands approached their digital presence on Amazon or partnering with collaborations that you never would’ve imagined, like Samsung & The Grand Tour.

Caroline’s influence on my professional development goes beyond specific tactics or strategies. Her approach to resilience – viewing obstacles as interesting puzzles rather than roadblocks – has fundamentally reshaped my mindset. In an industry where disruption is constant, her example taught me that adaptability coupled with unwavering determination is perhaps the most valuable skill set one can develop.

How has her heroism helped drive digital?

Caroline’s impact on digital innovation is both deep and far-reaching. At Amazon Ads, she transformed across fashion and luxury aligning with brands not typically seen on the ecommerce platform.

Caroline helped to shift from the “attention economy” to what she once called the “intimacy economy”—focusing on creating emotional connections rather than just clicks and impressions. She’s been championing technologies like AR/VR before they were buzzwords.

Creating opportunities for brands to connect both online and offline simultaneously. She consistently has shown that digital transformation is most powerful when it enhances human connection rather than replacing it.

What are the biggest challenges in digital we need another hero to solve?

I’m extremely excited about the opportunities that AI presents and I’m optimistic about the net benefits that it will provide for the digital economy and our everyday lives. However, drawing upon Mustafa Suleyman’s book, “The Coming Wave”, I believe our greatest challenge is building AI tools both powerful and ethical.

Three areas that I see are some areas of focus as we use AI include but not limited to the following.

  1. Promoting Explainability: Developing AI systems with built in explainability features can empower users to be less fearful and understand how decisions are being made and understand the platforms better.
  2. Collaboration between public and private sectors: To foster systems that work for all we must have all sectors and government invested, to set standards for AI ethics and usage.
  3. Embedding Ethics and trust into AI development: As AI becomes part of our everyday lives, it will have great influence on our decision-making, economies and societal norms. While AI has immense potential for good, we want to ensure it’s in the hands of great companies and innovators and not being used for unethical, biased or harmful activity.

I think the next heroes to address the challenges will bridge the gap between technology and ethics whilst growing commercial success.

What is your most heroic personal achievement so far in digital?

I’d like to revisit this question in 10 or 15 years when I’ll have a larger body of work that I can reflect on. I’d like to think my most heroic work is yet to come and I’m excited to discover what that will be.
