Why Tripadvisor is evolving into a media network and co-creator for global brands

Tripadvisor plans to become a full-service media network and content studio for global travel brands  As part of this move, rather than relying solely on traditional performance marketing or standard display ads, it partnered with Channel 4 as the primary sponsor for Fred’s Ultimate Hotels.

The new series, hosted by TV personality and maître d’ Fred Sirieix, follows him as he visits high-end hospitality venues around the globe, including Marrakesh’s Royal Mansour, South Africa’s Royal Madikwe safari lodge, Les Barmes de l’Ours in the French Alps, and Raffles Hotel in Singapore. In each episode, Sirieix experiences the property first as a guest, then swaps luxury for a staff uniform to work alongside hotel teams, presenting a Hospitality Hero Award at the end.

Behind the scenes, Tripadvisor operated as an event host and content agency alongside partners like the Singapore Tourism Board (STB). New Digital Age spoke with Justin Reid, Senior Director of Global Partnerships Solutions at Tripadvisor, to discuss the strategic mechanics behind the campaign, measuring TV ROI, and why Tripadvisor is stepping up as a fully-fledged media co-creator.

How do you structure these multi-stakeholder commercial models so that every partner gets measurable value out of a single broadcast property?

It tends to be that we would work with a programme commissioner around themes that we’d like to highlight, such as experiential travel or luxury, and they would work with a production house to co-pitch Channel 4 or ITV.

We almost work as an agency on behalf of the destinations to make sure their best content is showcased.

We contract with Channel 4, consult with our destination partners and Channel 4 hosts it. Where the reach really kicks in, though, is in streaming and international distribution, so full value isn’t normally seen until after 18 months.

How is Tripadvisor evaluating the ROI of sponsoring a primetime TV show compared to performance channels?

Initially it was mainly  reach and PR metrics, rather than hard booking data, unless we count a client like the Morocco Tourist Board rebooking as booking data. But we were very pleasantly surprised to see actually bookings for Singapore were up 14% over the same time period vs last year in the week following the show’s airing.

Inspiration is only half the journey; our role is turning that ‘wow’ moment into a ‘when can I go’ moment. We know Singapore and our other destination partners deliver at the highest level across world-class hospitality, dining, and cultural heritage.

By pairing broadcast entertainment with off-screen activations and streaming longevity, we help bring that warmth and wit to millions of prospective travellers.

Tripadvisor acted as a co-creator, ecosystem broker, and launch event partner here, far beyond a standard sponsorship badge.

Does this signal a long-term pivot toward Tripadvisor becoming a full-service media network and content studio for global travel brands?

Yes, 100% that’s the aim.

Redefining the Publisher-Platform Dynamic

For a brand historically rooted in review aggregation and booking conversion, stepping into primetime broadcast content represents a deliberate move up the consumer journey. By co-creating content around specific strategic themes, Tripadvisor allows destination partners to fund high-production storytelling while guaranteeing distribution across linear TV, streaming platforms, and global digital channels.

The strategy extends off-screen as well.

To celebrate the season finale in Singapore, Tripadvisor and STB co-hosted an exclusive premiere screening in London featuring Sirieix, the Singapore High Commissioner, media, and creators. The evening highlighted Sirieix’s hands-on experiences, from learning mixology at Raffles’ Long Bar to exploring cultural precincts in a Vespa sidecar, proving how entertainment content can directly enrich destination brand equity.

As linear broadcasts, streaming platforms, and digital booking tools continue to converge, Tripadvisor’s evolution into a content-driven media network shows how the future of travel marketing sits at the intersection of entertainment and platform utility.
